The Pains of Application Error and Dreamhost

Well, I am about over it. This site was down for a good portion of the day yesterday, serving up “Application Error” messages. I have not touched my code in one bit or tweaked any setting, and the joker was down. I have even noticed it down when Google tries to index my site, as when I used their webmaster tools I noticed the response errors

I was reading an article on shared hosting and Application Error and realized that Dreamhost may not be the answer I need.

So what is the answer? Right now, I don’t know. But the comments in the aforementioned article did make suggestions to Rails Playground Planet Argon and others. I suppose I will bit the bullet and look towards those services, once I have time after theInspirit gets through alpha.

  1. Ok. I’m just gonna have to copy paste my comment from townx.org

    Hi,

I run a server on Litespeed for freeonrails.com ( yeah, it’s free :) ) and my own apps. And it works like charm. No more application errors unless there is really an error.

Feel free to drop me an email and I’ll set you up with an account on my server :-)

    Thanks!

  2. I just moved my Rails site off Dreamhost because, after many mails with support, they couldn’t do better than 70% uptime.

If you’re running with the instructions on their wiki, try editing your dispatch.fcgi to do garbage collection quicker. What’s happening is that you reach your per-user RAM limit and their watchdog script crashes your site while trying to kill off some procs to free RAM. (The watchdog developer says it’s working fine, of course.)

  3. hey man,

i just stumbled across your blog and recognized your name from Digital Media @ UCF.

I just moved a rails application of mine – http://slurpee.awk-fu.com – from a shared dreamhost acct that crashed constantly to a dedicated server running nginx on the front end proxying to a couple of mongrels. The difference is night and day. I haven’t had a crash yet on the nginx/mongrel setup.

Anyway, good to see you’ve gotten into ruby, hope things are going well. Feel free to hit me up.
