Fun with Smart Playlists in iTunes

I use iTunes for managing my music, mostly because I have to or my iPod and iPhone don’t place nice. One of my favorite features is the smart playlists. So when I want a play list of cover songs, I don’t manually create a playlist, I use this feature to create the playlist for me.

Say I want a playlist of cover songs. What I will do is add a comment of “&cover” directly in the track info.

The reason I chose to use an & in front of the tag is so two fold. One, so if you have a comment talking about the album cover, it wouldn’t get added to the list. If you don’t like the &, leave it our or use your own.

Once I have done that to all of my songs, I create a new playlist with the following settings:

And now I have my playlist. The benefit to this is that if I move this song to another computer, say my work desktop, I can easily re-create the playlist.

Goodbye Typo, Hello WordPress

I have migrated my blog over to WordPress, finally! It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do because I wanted to free up some resources on my host as typo was taking up precious memory.

While I was at it, I also downloaded a new theme for the blog. Hope you like.

Dropping the WWW

I did this a while back, but I thought I would mention it now: I have dropped the www from ShiftEleven. This came about from a discussion I had with Jason He proposed the important question: “Is www even important or mean anything anymore?”

So like Ambethia.com ShiftEleven is a B class domain which means *www.shifteleven.com* redirects to *shifteleven.com*. What fun!

Migrated My Blog to Slicehost

I previously mentioned that I was experiencing pain points with dreamhost and I have finally done something about it. I purchased a slice from slicehost and set up my own Ubuntu box.

So now instead of Apache and FCGI running the show, I am using Lighttpd and Mongrel and I must say, it’s running much faster! In addition to running fast, holy crap is mongrel eating up some memory. I purchased the cheap slice, so I only have 256 megs of RAM(Random Access Memory), but 1 mongrel instance is taking up about 25% of my memory, and this blog isn’t the only blog I’m going to be hosting.

Because of this, it looks like I may be saying good-bye to Typo and am going to move to WordPress unless anyone out there has any suggestions.

The Pains of Application Error and Dreamhost

Well, I am about over it. This site was down for a good portion of the day yesterday, serving up “Application Error” messages. I have not touched my code in one bit or tweaked any setting, and the joker was down. I have even noticed it down when Google tries to index my site, as when I used their webmaster tools I noticed the response errors

I was reading an article on shared hosting and Application Error and realized that Dreamhost may not be the answer I need.

So what is the answer? Right now, I don’t know. But the comments in the aforementioned article did make suggestions to Rails Playground Planet Argon and others. I suppose I will bit the bullet and look towards those services, once I have time after theInspirit gets through alpha.
